Our God is a jealous God and many people don’t understand that. As I was thinking about it one day it hit me that God is jealous over us like a husband is jealous over his wife. God our Father sent His only Son to pay the ultimate price for a Bride which is the church. He gave what was most precious to Him to save a dying world so why wouldn’t He be jealous over us?

In the Old Testament Israel was God’s CHOSEN people, in the New Testament we are called the Bride of Christ because He died for us. God created Adam and Eve for FELLOWSHIP, to have a relationship with them which has not changed. In any relationship you want the other person to ONLY have affection for you and not to share intimate times, intimate discussions, and intimate secrets with someone else. Once you become married and share your intimacy with another it is called Adultery.

As a husband I am jealous over my wife’s affections and only want her looking at me, sleeping with me, holding my hand, and telling me alone that she loves me. I do not want her to share her affections with any other lover because we have a marriage vow or covenant. So why would our Creator and Heavenly Father want us to share our affections with other lovers? He is jealous over us like a husband is over a wife and He told Israel many times that they were in adultery because they were sharing their affections with other man made gods or breaking their covenant with God by serving other nations!

Some will wonder HOW we share our affections with other gods today. It is simply when we give something in life our undivided attention and forget who saved us, delivered us, watches over us, and died for us. Examples are when we spend our time glued to the tv, consumed with sports either watching or playing it, or even being a workaholic. Anytime we think of something in our lives all the time and put those things above God and sharing our affections with Him by reading His Word, praying, going to church, feeding the poor, or giving our money to support His work we are committing spiritual adultery.

If you stop for a moment and think about spiritual adultery and devoting your time to sports, work, hobbies, drugs, alcohol, or anything that takes you away from God’s relationship it just doesn’t make sense. You are devoting your time and money or investing it with something that can never give back to you. Think of it like flushing your money down the toilet, you might have momentary satisfaction but then it’s gone… so then you look for your next fix.

As a natural father I am also jealous over my children. I want them to give me their affection with hugs, love and kisses, and treat me with honor and respect. To love me and not spend lots of time over another father’s house or talk about how good a friend’s father is to them to try and get me to do something.

As a natural father and husband it is alright in our society to be jealous and covet our wives and children’s attention so why is it wrong for our Heavenly Father to do the same over us? As our Creator He gave us life which in my eyes, by default, makes Him our Father!

So jealously can be good when looked at in the proper light and God IS jealous over us and wants to protect us and only share our affections with Him. I personally want a Father and God who watches over me and not some statue, sports figure, job, or any other god in my life that can’t do anything for me but rob my time and money. I want to serve a God that I can go to in times of trouble and know that He is there and will do something when I cry out to Him!

Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything which the Lord your God has forbidden you. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deut 4:23-24 AMP

You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, And showing mercy and steadfast love to thousands and to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in falsehood or without purpose.
Deut 5:9-11 AMP

For you shall worship no other god; for the Lord, Whose name is Jealous, is a jealous (impassioned) God, Ex 34:14 AMP
