We have all heard many different teachings about Mary and Martha and I don’t believe it was wrong for Martha to be serving because Jesus washed the disciples feet and came to serve. If we read closely in the AMP exactly what Jesus told Martha we get a better picture of what I think He was really trying to get across to her. Martha chose to be busy and Mary chose to sit at Jesus feet.

But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! 41 But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her. Luk 10:40-42 AMP

We can get so legalistic about serving and doing works that we actually miss God trying to serve Him. Or spend all our time in His Presence and waiting upon Him and never do anything. Both are necessary in the proper time and the only way we truly know is being lead by Holy Spirit which is exactly what Jesus did.

Sometimes we get so preoccupied with serving and doing that we can actually miss the moment when the Lord just wants us to sit at His feet (in His Presence) and listen. It is easy for some of us to let legalism set in and always be busy and anxious about doing things that the Lord never told us to do in the first place. These things can all be good and sometimes even necessary, but not what Holy Spirit was leading us to do at that moment.

Maybe Martha was distracted with things and serving when really she should have been listening to what the Lord was teaching at that moment, like Mary. Maybe Martha missed an encounter with Jesus because she was busy trying to serve Him? Jesus didn’t rebuke either Martha or Mary, He just simply said that Mary has chosen the good portion, or another translation says “Mary has chosen the right thing“.

Before you run off being busy, try stopping and talking to the Holy Spirit and ask Him if this is something you should be doing right now? Jesus ONLY did what He saw His Father do, and ONLY said what He heard His Father say. In the scriptures it says He also went off and prayed and spent time with His Father many times. Jesus did both and discerned by the Holy Spirit which was necessary at that moment!
